Overview
This monumental 18th-century basilica in the La Latina district boasts the largest dome in Spain—33 metres in diameter—surpassing even St. Peter's Basilica in Rome at the time of construction.
Highlights
- The Dome: A massive 33-metre-wide neoclassical dome decorated with frescoes and natural light pouring through its oculus.
- Goya's San Bernardino: An early work by Francisco de Goya (1781–1783) hanging in the San Bernardino de Siena chapel, featuring a self-portrait of the young artist.
- The Seven Chapels: Six radial chapels surrounding the enormous circular nave, each decorated by a different leading Spanish painter of the era.
History
Built between 1761 and 1784 on a site traditionally associated with a hermitage founded by St. Francis of Assisi in 1217 during his pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela. The enormous dome was an engineering marvel, designed by Francisco Cabezas and completed by Antonio Pló.
