Overview
The Royal Yacht Britannia is the former royal yacht of the British Royal Family, now permanently berthed at Ocean Terminal in Leith. For 44 years, it carried the Queen and the Royal Family on 968 official voyages around the world.
Highlights
- The State Apartments: Surprisingly modest royal quarters, reflecting the Queen's preference for comfortable simplicity over ostentation.
- The Royal Deck Tea Room: A tearoom in the original Royal Deck, offering afternoon tea in the setting where the Queen once entertained world leaders.
- The Engine Room: The immaculately maintained engine room, kept to the exacting 'Yotsman's standards' demanded by the Royal Navy crew.
History
Launched in 1953 and decommissioned in 1997, Britannia sailed over 1,000,000 nautical miles. The decommissioning ceremony in Portsmouth brought tears to the Queen's eye — one of the very few times she was seen to show public emotion.
