Overview
The Nelson Monument is a 32-metre telescopic tower on Calton Hill, built in the shape of an inverted telescope to commemorate Admiral Lord Nelson's victory and death at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805.
Highlights
- The Time Ball: A white ball on the top of the monument drops at exactly 1:00 PM daily, synchronised with the One O'Clock Gun fired from Edinburgh Castle — a visible time signal originally for ships in the Firth of Forth.
- The Views: Superb close-range panoramas from the viewing gallery, offering arguably the best elevated view of Arthur's Seat and Holyrood Park.
History
Erected between 1807 and 1816, it was one of the first monuments in Britain to honour Nelson. The time ball mechanism was added in 1852 and has been in continuous operation ever since, making it one of the longest-running time signals in the world.
Visitor Tips
- Steep Stairs: The 143-step spiral staircase is narrow and steep — not recommended for those with mobility issues.
- Combined Visit: Combine with a walk around Calton Hill's other monuments, all freely accessible.
- Duration: 20–30 minutes.
