Camera Obscura & World of Illusions is a five-storey interactive attraction at the top of the Royal Mile, combining a genuine Victorian camera obscura with modern optical illusions, holograms, and a panoramic rooftop viewing deck.

History

The camera obscura was installed by optician Maria Theresa Short in 1853, making this Edinburgh's longest-running visitor attraction. The building — Castlehill's Short's Observatory — has housed scientific displays ever since.

Visitor Tips

• Camera Obscura Shows: The live demonstrations of the camera obscura device run regularly but only on dry, bright days — cloud cover makes the image too dim.
• Arrive Early: Queues grow long from mid-morning. Aim for opening time if visiting in summer.
