Overview
Arthur's Seat summit is the 251-metre peak of an ancient volcano in the heart of Edinburgh, offering the most spectacular panoramic views in the city. The climb to the top is one of Edinburgh's essential experiences.
Highlights
- The 360° View: On a clear day, the panorama extends from the Bass Rock and East Lothian coast to the Forth bridges and across to Fife, with the whole of Edinburgh spread below.
- The Geology: The exposed volcanic rock formations at the summit date back 340 million years and show clear evidence of volcanic lava flows and columnar basalt.
- The Sense of Wilderness: Standing on the summit, surrounded by grass and rock, it is hard to believe you are in the centre of a capital city.
History
The summit has been a significant landmark since prehistory — the remains of prehistoric hill forts have been found on the slopes. The name Arthur's Seat may derive from the Gaelic "Àrd-na-Said" (height of arrows) rather than any connection to King Arthur.
Visitor Tips
- Route Choice: The gentlest ascent is from Dunsapie Loch car park (20 minutes); the most popular route from Holyrood Palace takes about 45 minutes.
- Weather: Conditions can change rapidly — bring layers. The summit is frequently windy, even in summer.
- Duration: 1.5–2 hours round trip from Holyrood.
