Overview
The Palau Sant Jordi is a 17,000-capacity indoor arena on Montjuïc, designed by Japanese architect Arata Isozaki for the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. It serves as Barcelona's primary venue for major concerts, sporting events, and exhibitions.
Highlights
- Olympic legacy: Built for the 1992 Games, where it hosted gymnastics and volleyball finals, it remains one of Europe's most architecturally significant arenas.
- Roof engineering: The space-frame roof was assembled at ground level and hydraulically raised into position — an engineering feat at the time.
- Concert venue: Has hosted artists from Bruce Springsteen and Beyoncé to the Three Tenors.
History
Completed in 1990, the arena was the centerpiece of the Anella Olímpica (Olympic Ring) complex on Montjuïc. Isozaki's design draws on traditional Japanese architectural principles, blending curves with the Montjuïc hillside.
Visitor Tips
- Event-dependent: The arena is only accessible during events — check the schedule.
