The Gran Teatre del Liceu is Barcelona's principal opera house, located on La Rambla. Founded in 1847, it is one of the oldest and most prestigious opera houses in Europe, with a season running from September to July.

History
The original theater opened in 1847, financed by private shareholders. It was destroyed by fire in 1861 and again in 1994. The current building, rebuilt and reopened in 1999, faithfully restores the 19th-century interiors while adding modern stage technology.
