Inwood Hill Park

Overview

Inwood Hill Park occupies the northern tip of Manhattan and contains the island's last remaining natural forest, old-growth tulip trees, and the only salt marsh left on the island. It is as close to pre-colonial Manhattan as you can experience.

Highlights

• Old-Growth Forest: 196 acres of natural woodland that has never been developed — some tulip trees are estimated to be over 200 years old.
• Shorakkapoch Rock: A plaque marks the traditional site where Peter Minuit purchased Manhattan from the Lenape people in 1626.
• Birding: One of the best birding sites in Manhattan, with over 170 species recorded including great horned owls and bald eagles.

Visitor Tips

• A Train to 207th Street: The A train's last Manhattan stop is one block from the park entrance.
• Trails: Multiple walking trails wind through the forest and along the river. The trails can be muddy after rain — wear appropriate shoes.
• Duration: 1–1.5 hours.
