Yasukuni Shrine

Overview

Yasukuni Shrine is a large Shinto shrine in Chiyoda dedicated to the spirits of those who died in service of Japan. Set in extensive grounds with a war museum, the shrine is both a place of quiet contemplation and one of Japan's most politically controversial sites.

Highlights

• Cherry Blossoms: Yasukuni is one of Tokyo's premier cherry blossom viewing spots, with over 500 trees. The Japan Meteorological Agency uses a specific tree here as the official marker for Tokyo's cherry blossom season.
• Yūshūkan Museum: A war museum within the grounds displaying military artifacts including a zero fighter plane, a kaiten torpedo, and a steam locomotive from the Burma-Siam Railway.
• The Grounds: Expansive, peaceful grounds with massive torii gates, stone lanterns, and sumo and noh theatre spaces.

Visitor Tips

• Free Grounds: The shrine grounds are free and open daily. The Yūshūkan museum charges a separate admission.
• Context: The shrine is controversial because it enshrines Class-A war criminals alongside other war dead. Visits by politicians regularly make international news.
