Tsukiji Honganji

Overview

Tsukiji Honganji is a striking Buddhist temple that looks unlike any other in Japan — its facade is modelled on ancient Indian Buddhist architecture, with stone carvings of animals and mythological creatures adorning an exterior inspired by Hindu and Islamic design.

Highlights

• Unique Architecture: Designed by Itō Chūta in 1934, the building combines Indian stone architecture with a Japanese Buddhist interior — stained glass windows, pipe organ, and all.
• Pipe Organ: One of the few Buddhist temples in the world with a pipe organ, used for regular concerts and ceremonies.
