Overview

Kōenji is Tokyo's counterculture capital — a bohemian neighbourhood of vintage clothing shops, underground live houses, punk bars, and curry restaurants that has maintained its alternative identity despite gentrification sweeping through other Tokyo neighbourhoods.

Highlights

• Vintage Shopping: The highest concentration of secondhand and vintage clothing stores in Tokyo, with dozens of shops selling everything from 1950s Americana to Japanese workwear.
• Live Houses: Small underground live music venues — some holding fewer than 50 people — hosting punk, noise, indie, and experimental music nightly.
• Awa Odori: Every August, Kōenji hosts the Tokyo Awa Odori, a massive street dance festival with over 10,000 dancers and 1 million spectators.

Visitor Tips

• South Exit: Most of the vintage shops and bars are concentrated south of the JR station along the covered shopping arcade.
• Evening Scene: The bar scene comes alive after 8 PM. Many bars are tiny — seating 10 people or fewer.
