Ikebukuro

Overview

Ikebukuro is a major commercial district on Tokyo's northwest side, centred around one of the world's busiest railway stations. Less polished than Shibuya or Shinjuku, it has a grittier energy and has become a hub for anime culture, particularly otome (female-oriented) content.

Highlights

• Otome Road: The female counterpart to Akihabara's male-oriented anime culture — shops selling manga, doujinshi, and goods targeted at female anime fans line this stretch of Ikebukuro.
• Sunshine City: A massive commercial complex including the Sunshine 60 observation deck, an aquarium, a planetarium, and a Pokémon Center.
• Department Store Wars: Seibu and Tobu — two of Japan's largest department stores — face each other across the station, creating fierce retail competition.

Visitor Tips

• Animate Ikebukuro: The world's largest anime merchandise store occupies multiple floors. Even non-fans will find the scale impressive.
• Ramen: Ikebukuro is one of Tokyo's best ramen neighbourhoods. Try the shops around the east exit.
• Duration: 2–3 hours.
