Overview

The Edo-Tokyo Museum traces the history of Tokyo from its origins as the fishing village of Edo to the modern megalopolis, using full-scale reconstructions, scale models, and interactive exhibits across a massive exhibition space.

Highlights

• Nihonbashi Bridge: A full-scale replica of the original Nihonbashi bridge spans the entrance hall — visitors walk across it to enter the Edo-period exhibitions.
• Edo-Period Streetscapes: Full-size reconstructions of Edo-period buildings including a merchant's house, a kabuki theatre, and a newspaper office.
• 1923 & 1945: Powerful sections covering the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923 and the firebombing of 1945 that destroyed much of the city.
