Overview
The Shed is a cultural centre at Hudson Yards featuring a remarkable kinetic architecture — a telescoping outer shell that can expand to double the building's footprint, creating a vast, column-free space for large-scale performances and installations.
Highlights
- The Architecture: Designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro, the moveable outer shell (The McCourt) rolls out on rails to create a 17,000-square-foot event space.
- Multidisciplinary Program: Concerts, art installations, theatre, film screenings, and technology-driven experiences — often all at once.
- Commissions: The Shed regularly commissions ambitious new works by leading contemporary artists.
History
Opened in April 2019 as part of the Hudson Yards development, The Shed was conceived as a new type of cultural institution — flexible enough to host any art form. It was the first major arts centre built in New York since Lincoln Center in the 1960s.
