Overview
The Staten Island Ferry is a free, 25-minute commuter ferry connecting Whitehall Terminal in Lower Manhattan to St. George Terminal on Staten Island. The ride offers some of the best views of the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, and the Lower Manhattan skyline — all without paying a cent.
Highlights
- Statue of Liberty Views: The ferry passes directly by the Statue of Liberty on its starboard (right) side heading to Staten Island, offering photo opportunities rivaling the paid cruise.
- Skyline Panorama: The receding view of the Lower Manhattan skyline as you head south is iconic — especially dramatic at sunset.
- Genuine Commute: This is not a tourist attraction — it is a real commuter ferry used by thousands of New Yorkers daily, giving it an authentic city experience.
History
The ferry service has operated continuously since 1905, making it one of the oldest commuter ferry routes in the world. It has been fare-free since 1997 and carries over 25 million passengers annually.
