Overview
SoHo (South of Houston) is one of the world's premier shopping districts, set among the largest concentration of cast-iron architecture on Earth. The neighbourhood's cobblestone streets are lined with designer boutiques, flagship stores, and independent shops.
Highlights
- Cast-Iron Architecture: The facades along Broadway, Greene Street, and Broome Street feature elaborately detailed cast-iron fronts from the 1860s–1880s, now housing luxury retail.
- Mix of Retail: Everything from major luxury brands (Chanel, Prada) to independent designers and concept stores like Opening Ceremony and Glossier.
- Street Culture: SoHo's sidewalks are a show in themselves — street vendors, artists, and some of the best people-watching in New York.
History
Once an industrial warehouse district known as the Cast-Iron District, SoHo was saved from demolition in the 1960s–70s by artists who illegally moved into the loft spaces. Their presence attracted galleries, then boutiques, then luxury brands, transforming it into the commercial district it is today.
Visitor Tips
- Greene Street: Walk the full length of Greene Street between Canal and Houston for the most impressive cast-iron facades.
- Weekend Crowds: SoHo is extremely crowded on weekend afternoons. Weekday mornings are the best time to browse.
- Duration: 1.5–2 hours.
