Overview
Governors Island is a 172-acre park in New York Harbor, accessible by a short free ferry ride from Lower Manhattan or Brooklyn. Once a military base, it has been transformed into a public park with art installations, rolling hills, and spectacular skyline views.
Highlights
- The Hills: Four hills built from recycled construction fill and soil, with the tallest rising 70 feet and offering 360-degree views of the Statue of Liberty, Manhattan, and Brooklyn.
- Hammock Grove: A grove of hundreds of hammocks strung between trees — the most relaxing spot in all of New York City.
- Public Art: Rotating large-scale art installations and sculptures dot the island's grounds.
History
A military installation from the American Revolution through the Coast Guard's departure in 1996, the island was transferred to the City of New York in 2003. The 43-acre park designed by West 8 opened in phases from 2014 to 2016.
