Overview
Essex Market is a historic Lower East Side food hall that has operated in various forms since 1940. In 2019 it relocated to a sleek, modern building on Delancey Street, housing dozens of independent food vendors, butchers, fishmongers, and specialty shops under one roof.
Highlights
- Diverse Vendors: Over 30 vendors spanning Japanese, Mexican, Jewish deli, seafood, cheese, and more — all from independent operators, not chain restaurants.
- Shopsin's: The legendary, eccentric breakfast joint with an absurdly massive menu and a famously testy owner moved here from its previous location.
- Modern Building: The 2019 building is bright, airy, and well-designed, with communal seating areas and large windows overlooking the street.
History
Mayor Fiorello La Guardia established Essex Market in 1940 to move pushcart vendors off the streets. For decades it served the immigrant communities of the Lower East Side. The 2019 relocation preserved its spirit while modernizing the space.
