The Little Mermaid is a modest but globally recognized bronze statue sitting on a rock at the Langelinie promenade. It serves as Copenhagen's most famous landmark and an icon of Danish fairy tales.
Sculptor Edvard Eriksen created the statue in 1913, commissioned by Carl Jacobsen of Carlsberg breweries after he fell in love with a ballet performance of Hans Christian Andersen's tragic tale. Over the years, the statue has been famously vandalized and restored multiple times.
