Superkilen

Overview

Superkilen is a brilliantly subversive, award-winning urban park in the highly diverse Nørrebro district. Stretching nearly a kilometre, it is divided into three distinct color zones designed to celebrate the global backgrounds of the local residents.

Highlights

• The Red Square: A vibrant, decidedly painted area focused on modern urban life, café culture, and music.
• The Black Market: The classic square centering on a Moroccan star fountain, featuring Brazilian bar chairs and Japanese cherry trees.
• The Green Park: A lush, rolling landscape dedicated to sports and picnics.

History

Completed in 2012 by the renowned Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) alongside Superflex and Topotek 1. Instead of creating a standardized Danish park, they asked locals to nominate municipal objects from their home countries, resulting in 108 objects from 60 nations dotting the landscape.

Visitor Tips

• Photography: It is incredibly photogenic, especially the dramatic, white-lined asphalt of the Black Market.
• Getting There: Easy to reach by biking or taking the Metro to Nørrebros Runddel.
• Duration: 45–60 minutes to walk the full length.
