Overview
The Rundetaarn, or Round Tower, is a unique 17th-century architectural marvel rising above the historic centre of Copenhagen. Famous for its equestrian staircase, it offers arguably the best vantage point in the inner city.
Highlights
- Spiral Ramp: The unique, step-free 7.5-turn spiral corridor leading to the top.
- Viewing Platform: Enjoy stunning, 360-degree panoramic views of Copenhagen's red-tiled roofs and historic spires.
- Library Hall: A beautiful exhibition space halfway up the ramp, which once served as the university library.
History
Built by King Christian IV between 1637 and 1642 as an astronomical observatory for the University of Copenhagen. The unusual spiral ramp was designed so that heavy, fragile astronomical instruments could be transported up the tower using horses and carriages.
Visitor Tips
- Accessibility: While there are no stairs on the main ramp, there is a narrow, steep spiral staircase for the final ascent to the outdoor platform.
- Duration: Allow 45–60 minutes.
- Best time to visit: Clear days for the best views, or during the evening when the observatory is sometimes open for stargazing.
