Overview
Freetown Christiania is a vibrant, controversial, and entirely unique intentional community within the Christianshavn neighborhood. Famous for its alternative lifestyle, endless street art, and homemade houses, it operates completely independent of the Danish government.
Highlights
- The Architecture: Walk the dirt paths towards the lake to see highly creative, eclectic, and self-built eco-homes.
- Street Art: The entire area serves as an open-air gallery of vibrant, ever-changing murals and sculptures.
- Nemo Land: A popular outdoor music venue and beer garden that serves as the social heart of the community.
History
In 1971, a group of squatters broke into an abandoned military barracks, claiming it as a free city based on collectivism and anarchist principles. Despite decades of friction with authorities over its open cannabis trade (on "Pusher Street"), it has survived as a massive social experiment for over half a century.
Visitor Tips
- Pusher Street rules: Absolutely no photography is allowed on Pusher Street (the main drag). Locals take this rule very seriously.
- Safety: Keep your situational awareness sharp, but it is generally very safe during the day.
- Duration: 1–2 hours to wander the area and the lake paths.
