Overview
CopenHill is a breathtaking example of Danish architectural ingenuity. It is a highly efficient waste-to-energy power plant that brilliantly doubles as an artificial ski slope, hiking area, and the tallest climbing wall in the world.
Highlights
- The Ski Slope: 400 metres of green Neveplast artificial turf allowing skiing right in the city center year-round.
- The Summit: Take the glass elevator to the top for a café and fantastic, unfiltered views of the ocean, city, and Malmö.
- The Climbing Wall: An imposing 85-metre high climbing wall built directly onto the facade of the power plant.
History
Designed by the Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) and opened in 2019, Amager Bakke replaced an aging incinerator. BIG's vision was "hedonistic sustainability"—proving that environmentally friendly infrastructure could also be fun, beautiful, and act as a public landmark.
Visitor Tips
- Skiing: You must rent equipment and buy a lift pass in advance to ski.
- Hiking/Views: You can hike up the side of the building (or take the elevator) to the viewing platforms completely for free.
- Duration: 1–1.5 hours for the views, more if skiing.
