Overview
The Church of Our Saviour is a majestic Baroque church in the Christianshavn district, instantly recognizable by its dark wood and gold external winding staircase that spirals dramatically into the sky.
Highlights
- The Spiral Spire: Climb the 400 steps—the last 150 of which are outside winding around the spire—for unparalleled views of the city.
- The Golden Globe: The spire is topped by a golden globe and an imposing figure of Christ carrying a banner.
- The Altarpiece: A monumental and complex masterpiece of intricate woodcarving inside the church.
History
Consecrated in 1696, the main building was designed by Lambert van Haven. However, the famous corkscrew spire was added over 50 years later by Lauritz de Thurah. A popular urban legend claims the architect jumped from the top when he realized the spiral turned the "wrong" way (anti-clockwise), though this is pure myth.
Visitor Tips
- Tickets: Booking a time slot online is highly recommended to climb the tower.
- Weather: The outdoor portion of the climb is steep, windy, and not for those with vertigo.
