Overview

Amalienborg Palace is the elegant winter residence of the Danish royal family. The complex consists of four identical Rococo palaces arranged symmetrically around a grand octagonal courtyard, offering a surprisingly intimate look at modern monarchy.

History

Originally built in the 1750s for four noble families, the royals moved here after Christiansborg Palace burned down in 1794. It has served as the primary royal residence ever since, blending centuries of tradition with the lives of the contemporary royal family.

Visitor Tips

• The Guard Ceremony: Arrive by 11:45 AM to get a good viewing spot in the courtyard. If the Queen is in residence, the ceremony is larger and features a marching band.
• Duration: 1–1.5 hours for the museum and courtyard.
• Tickets: Covered by the Copenhagen Card; consider a combined ticket with Rosenborg Castle.
