Overview
Rockefeller Center is a massive Art Deco commercial complex spanning 22 acres in Midtown Manhattan. It is home to the famous Top of the Rock observation deck, NBC Studios, and the iconic winter ice rink.
Highlights
- Top of the Rock: Three open-air observation decks on floors 67–70 offering unobstructed views of the Empire State Building and Central Park — arguably better views than from the ESB itself.
- The Christmas Tree: The world's most famous Christmas tree, erected annually since 1933, paired with the legendary ice-skating rink in the sunken plaza below.
- NBC Studio Tour: A behind-the-scenes tour of the studios where Saturday Night Live, The Tonight Show, and the Today show are produced.
History
Built during the Great Depression between 1930 and 1939 by John D. Rockefeller Jr., it was the largest private building project ever undertaken at the time. The complex employed 75,000 workers during construction.
Visitor Tips
- Top of the Rock vs ESB: Many locals prefer Top of the Rock because you see the Empire State Building in your view rather than being on top of it.
- Sunset: Book a timed entry for 30 minutes before sunset for golden hour skyline photography.
- Duration: 1–1.5 hours.
