Overview
Little Island is a free, fantastical 2.4-acre public park built on 132 concrete tulip-shaped pillars rising from the Hudson River at Pier 55. It is New York's most imaginative and whimsical new public space.
Highlights
- The Landscape: Three dramatic hilltop spaces connected by winding paths, with lush planted gardens, hidden groves, and sweeping water views designed by Thomas Heatherwick.
- The Amph: A 687-seat amphitheater nestled into one of the hills, hosting free and ticketed performances including theater, music, and dance.
- Sunset Views: The western orientation over the Hudson River makes it one of Manhattan's prime sunset viewing spots.
History
Funded entirely by media mogul Barry Diller and fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg at a cost of $260 million. It opened in 2021 on the site of Pier 54, the original dock where Titanic survivors arrived in 1912.
