Overview
The Empire State Building is the archetypal Art Deco skyscraper, standing 443 meters to its antenna tip. For nearly 40 years the world's tallest building, it remains the most emotionally iconic tower on the New York skyline.
Highlights
- 86th Floor Observatory: The classic open-air observation deck offering 360-degree views of Manhattan, featured in over 250 movies from King Kong to Sleepless in Seattle.
- 102nd Floor Observatory: A recently renovated, enclosed top-floor deck offering even more dramatic views, though without the open-air wind-in-your-hair experience.
- Art Deco Lobby: The stunning restored marble lobby with original 1930s ceiling murals and gilded metalwork.
History
Built in just 410 days during the Great Depression, opening on May 1, 1931. The building was initially a financial disaster — so much office space sat empty it was nicknamed the "Empty State Building." It regained the title of NYC's tallest after the destruction of the World Trade Center in 2001.
