Overview
The Brooklyn Bridge is the iconic 1883 suspension bridge spanning the East River, connecting Manhattan and Brooklyn. Its massive Gothic stone towers and sweeping steel cables have made it the most photographed bridge in the world.
Highlights
- The Promenade Walk: The elevated wooden-plank pedestrian walkway offers spectacular views of the Manhattan skyline, the Statue of Liberty, and the bridge's own Gothic arches.
- DUMBO View: Walking from Manhattan to Brooklyn delivers you into DUMBO, where Washington Street frames the bridge's Manhattan tower perfectly between brick warehouses.
- Sunset Crossing: Walking westward toward Manhattan at sunset paints the skyline in spectacular golden light.
History
Designed by John Augustus Roebling and completed in 1883 after 14 years of construction, it was the world's first steel-wire suspension bridge and longest suspension bridge for 20 years. Its construction killed 27 workers, including the designer himself.
