Overview
The Broadway Theatre District is a cluster of 41 professional theaters concentrated in the blocks surrounding Times Square, producing the most celebrated and commercially successful theatrical productions in the world.
Highlights
- The Shows: The world's most famous musicals — from The Lion King to Wicked to Hamilton — playing nightly to packed houses.
- Shubert Alley: The legendary narrow passageway between 44th and 45th Streets where actors once gathered hoping to be cast, now a charming pedestrian lane.
- Stage Doors: After performances, many actors sign autographs and take photos at the stage doors along 44th, 45th, and 46th Streets.
History
Broadway theater dates to the 1750s, but the modern Theatre District consolidated in the early 1900s around Longacre Square (renamed Times Square in 1904). The 41 "Broadway" theaters are defined by having 500+ seats within a specific geographic boundary.
