Overview
Shinjuku is Tokyo's hyperactive commercial and entertainment mega-district, home to the world's busiest railway station, towering skyscrapers, a massive red-light district, and some of the city's best nightlife.
Highlights
- Shinjuku Station: The world's busiest station, serving 3.5 million passengers daily — a dizzying labyrinth of 200+ exits connecting dozens of rail lines.
- Kabukicho: Tokyo's largest entertainment and red-light district, neon-drenched and chaotic, increasingly cleaned up but still thrillingly edgy.
- Golden Gai: A tiny network of narrow alleys crammed with over 200 impossibly small bars, each seating only 5–10 people.
History
Shinjuku's western side was farmland until 1885 when the railway arrived. The post-WWII black market economy fueled Kabukicho's growth. The skyscraper district on the west side was built on a former water purification plant in the 1970s.
Visitor Tips
- Night Visit: Shinjuku truly comes alive after dark. Visit Kabukicho and Golden Gai from 8 PM onward.
- Navigation: The station is notoriously confusing. Use the East Exit for Kabukicho, West Exit for the skyscrapers.
- Duration: 2–4 hours.
