Senso-ji

Overview

Senso-ji is Tokyo's oldest and most significant Buddhist temple, founded in 645 AD. Located in the heart of Asakusa, it draws over 30 million visitors annually, making it one of the most visited religious sites in the world.

Highlights

• Kaminarimon Gate: The iconic Thunder Gate with its massive red lantern, standing 11.7 meters tall, serves as the temple's instantly recognizable symbol.
• Nakamise-dori: A 250-meter shopping street lined with nearly 90 stalls selling traditional snacks, souvenirs, and crafts leading up to the main hall.
• Five-Story Pagoda: The striking 53-meter pagoda, rebuilt in 1973, is the second tallest pagoda in Japan and beautifully illuminated at night.

History

Legend holds that two fishermen found a golden statue of Kannon (the goddess of mercy) in the Sumida River in 628 AD, and the temple was built to enshrine it. Though destroyed during WWII bombing, it was faithfully reconstructed and remains the spiritual heart of old Tokyo.

Visitor Tips

• Early Morning: Visit before 7:00 AM to experience the temple grounds in peaceful solitude before the crowds arrive.
• Night Visit: The temple and pagoda are beautifully lit after dark, and the Nakamise shops close, creating a serene atmosphere.
• Duration: 1–1.5 hours.
