Overview
Omoide Yokocho ("Memory Lane") is a narrow, atmospheric alley of tiny, smoke-filled yakitori stalls crammed under the railway tracks just outside Shinjuku Station's west exit.
Highlights
- Yakitori: Dozens of impossibly narrow open-front stalls grilling chicken skewers over charcoal, each seating only 6–10 people on cramped stools.
- Atmosphere: The thick smoke, sizzling sounds, red lanterns, and tight quarters create an unforgettable, genuinely old Tokyo atmosphere.
- Affordability: A full meal of several yakitori skewers and a beer costs remarkably little compared to nearby Shinjuku restaurants.
History
Originating as a post-WWII black market, the alley has operated continuously since the late 1940s. It survived numerous fire scares and demolition threats, and is now protected as a beloved cultural landmark.
Visitor Tips
- Cash Only: Most stalls are cash-only. Bring small bills.
- Peak Time: The alley is most atmospheric and lively from 6–9 PM on weekday evenings when salary workers stop in after work.
- Duration: 45–60 minutes.
