Overview
Gotoku-ji is a charming Buddhist temple in the quiet Setagaya ward, famous as the legendary birthplace of the maneki-neko — the iconic beckoning cat figurine that has become a global symbol of good luck.
Highlights
- The Cat Shrine: An extraordinary display of thousands of white beckoning cat figurines of all sizes, donated by visitors whose wishes were granted, covering shelves and spilling across the grounds.
- Peaceful Grounds: Far from the tourist trail, the beautifully maintained temple grounds with mature pine trees offer a genuinely serene escape from central Tokyo.
- Three-Story Pagoda: A beautiful small pagoda decorated with subtle cat motifs hidden in the carvings.
History
Founded in 1480, the temple's cat legend dates to the early Edo period when a feudal lord was beckoned inside by a cat, narrowly avoiding a lightning strike. In gratitude, he became the temple's patron, and the beckoning cat became its symbol.
