Santa Maria della Vittoria is a small, outwardly unassuming Baroque church located near Piazza della Repubblica. However, it explodes with theatrical opulence inside and is globally famous for housing the single most dramatic sculpture of the Roman Baroque period.
Designed by Carlo Maderno in 1605, the church was dedicated to a pivotal Catholic battlefield victory over Protestant forces at the Battle of White Mountain (1620) in Prague. Bernini, seeking to restore his damaged reputation following a disastrous bell tower collapse at St. Peter's, completed the Teresa statue in 1652, single-handedly redefining Baroque sculpture.
