Overview
Piazza della Rotonda is the bustling, chaotic, romantic massive square sitting in front of the sweeping portico of the Pantheon. It represents the quintessential, energetic heart of the deep Roman historical center.
Highlights
- The Pantheon View: standing next to the massive fountain and looking up at the immense, intact 2,000-year-old ancient Roman temple dominating the square.
- The Fountain: The beautiful, ornate Renaissance fountain sitting in the center, designed by Giacomo della Porta, surmounted by a massive, towering ancient Egyptian obelisk covered tightly in hieroglyphics.
- The Cafes: The massive, packed cafe terraces wrapping around the square, offering the most famous (and priced) espresso in the world.
History
For massive centuries during the chaotic Middle Ages, the massive square was a filthy, dangerous, disorganized massive fish and poultry market, packed with illegal wooden stalls leaning onto the ancient columns of the Pantheon. In the strict 19th century, the Popes cleared the massive market, restoring the sweeping elegance seen today.
Visitor Tips
- The Night Vibe: It is magical at night when the chaotic massive tourist groups leave and the massive columns of the Pantheon are illuminated by sweeping golden spotlights under a dark sky.
- Gelato: The famous, massive Giolitti gelateria is located just two narrow streets north of the piazza.
