Overview
EUR (Esposizione Universale Roma) is a vast, surreal, intimidating district located significantly south of the ancient center. It is a masterpiece of sweeping, blindingly white grandiose Fascist-era Rationalist architecture.
Highlights
- The Square Colosseum: (Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana). the, terrifying masterpiece of the district. It is a soaring, stark white marble cube pierced by symmetrical, identical repeating arches on all massive sides.
- The Scale: Everything in EUR is, oversized—the straight, immensely wide boulevards, the towering statues of muscled athletes, and the massive sweeping stone staircases.
- The Lake: A massive, artificially engineered rectangular lake dominating the southern end, surrounded by towering stark white corporate buildings and lush modernist parks.
History
Mussolini commissioned the massive district from absolute scratch in the late 1930s to host the massive 1942 World's Fair (which never actually happened due to the outbreak of WWII). It was designed to forcefully loudly showcase the massive brutal power of the New Fascist Italian Empire, replacing the chaotic curved streets of ancient Rome with brutal, massive straight lines.
