Overview
Crowning the highest point in the City of London, St. Paul's Cathedral is a staggering, massive English Baroque masterpiece designed by Sir Christopher Wren, dominating the skyline with its iconic dome.
Highlights
- The Dome: One of the largest cathedral domes in the entire world, beautifully dominating the London skyline and functioning as a fierce symbol of national resilience.
- The Whispering Gallery: Climb 257 steps to a circular gallery hugging the dome's interior, where the curved walls mysteriously carry whispers across the massive 30-metre void.
- The Crypt: The massive, atmospheric underground crypt functioning as the final resting place for fierce national heroes like Lord Nelson, the Duke of Wellington, and Wren himself.
History
After the furious, utterly devastating Great Fire of London obliterated the ancient medieval cathedral in 1666, Sir Christopher Wren was powerfully tasked with designing a brilliant replacement. He controversially pushed forward an incredibly modern, classically inspired dome design, taking 35 years to complete the colossal structure.
