Overview
Rue Crémieux is arguably the most photographed, colorful residential street in all of Paris. Tucked away in the 12th arrondissement near Gare de Lyon, this pedestrian-only cobblestone street is lined with beautifully painted, vibrant pastel houses.
Highlights
- The Pastel Facades: Every single house is painted differently—from intense lemon yellow to soft lavender and mint green—creating a beautifully cohesive but contrasting color palette.
- The Shutters and Details: Look closely at the incredibly charming details: hand-painted trompe l'oeil birds, elaborate brass knockers, and lush climbing vines hugging the pastel walls.
- The Cobblestones: The authentic 19th-century paving stones beautifully enhance the feeling of having stepped back in time into a provincial village.
History
built in 1865, it was originally designed as uniform, identical worker's housing. It wasn't until 1993, when the street was officially pedestrianized, that the residents collectively decided to paint their facades in matching pastel colors, totally accidentally creating an Instagram phenomenon.
Visitor Tips
- Photography Rules: Please be respectful. This is a normal residential street where people actually live. Do not boldly sit on their front steps or peer into their windows.
- Duration: 10-15 intimately quiet minutes.
