Overview
The Musée Rodin is arguably the most romantic and atmospheric museum in Paris. Dedicated entirely to the works of the master sculptor Auguste Rodin, it is housed in the spectacular 18th-century Hôtel Biron and its magnificent three-hectare sculpture garden.
Highlights
- The Thinker: Rodin's most famous, monumental bronze statue sitting perfectly framed amidst the lush geometric gardens.
- The Gates of Hell: The towering, wildly complex, and endlessly fascinating bronze door depicting scenes from Dante's Inferno.
- The Kiss: The passionate, incredibly smooth marble masterpiece housed inside the sunlit, wood-paneled mansion.
History
Rodin rented rooms in the deteriorating Hôtel Biron in 1908. He fell deeply in love with the estate and struck a deal with the French state: he would donate his entire life's work and personal art collection to the nation, provided they turned the mansion into a museum dedicated to his legacy upon his death.
Visitor Tips
- The Gardens: The gardens alone are worth the visit. You can buy a cheaper "garden only" ticket if you are short on time.
- Camille Claudel: Don't miss the dedicated room inside showcasing the brilliant works of Rodin's muse and fellow sculptor.
