Overview
Hidden down a cobblestone alleyway in the 9th arrondissement, the Musée de la Vie Romantique is a charming, hidden gem. Set in a beautiful 1830s house with an overgrown courtyard, it captures the literary and artistic spirit of the Romantic era.
Highlights
- George Sand's Memorabilia: The ground floor is dedicated to the independent female novelist, displaying her personal jewelry, furniture, and incredibly romantic plaster casts of her (and Chopin's) hands.
- The Studio: The beautifully lit, atmospheric painting studio of Ary Scheffer, the original owner of the house.
- The Courtyard Garden: A spectacularly lush, flower-filled courtyard that feels removed from the bustling modern city outside.
History
In the 1830s, this house belonged to the Dutch-French painter Ary Scheffer. Every Friday evening, he hosted a legendary salon that served as the social epicenter for the giants of the Romantic movement, attracting regular guests such as George Sand, Frédéric Chopin, Franz Liszt, and Eugène Delacroix.
