Tucked into the historic Hôtel Donon in the vibrant Marais district, the Musée Cognacq-Jay offers a delightful, deeply intimate immersion into 18th-century French elegance. The museum perfectly showcases the refined, highly localized artistic tastes of the Parisian elite.
The collection was amassed by Ernest Cognacq and his wife Marie-Louise Jay, the founders of the incredibly lucrative Samaritaine department store. While their contemporaries were excitedly buying massive Impressionist works, this couple focused almost exclusively on the delicate, highly refined art and objects of the 18th-century French Enlightenment. They donated the entire collection to the City of Paris in 1928.
