History
The Théâtre de la Gaîté Lyrique was founded in 1862, moving to its current location on Rue Papin during Haussmann's urban works. Jacques Offenbach was among its directors during its 19th-century heyday. After decades of decline and abandonment from 1991 — locals ironically nicknamed it "The Sad Mute" — it was renovated under mayor Bertrand Delanoë and reopened in December 2010 as a digital arts center.
Visitor Tips
- Check the current program before visiting — the venue's appeal depends heavily on what's showing.
- The ground floor spaces and foyer are often free to enter even outside specific events.
- Metro Réaumur–Sébastopol (Lines 3 & 4) is the most convenient stop.
