Overview
The Champ de Mars is a sprawling, 24-hectare public green space extending southeast from the base of the Eiffel Tower. It is universally beloved by locals and tourists alike as the ultimate spot for iconic photos and scenic Parisian picnics.
Highlights
- The Views: It offers completely unobstructed, constantly changing views of the Eiffel Tower as you walk the entire length of the park.
- The Lawns: Massive, impeccably maintained stretches of grass that technically allow visitors to walk, sit, and play on them (a rarity for central Paris parks).
- The Mur de la Paix: The striking, modern glass "Wall for Peace" located at the far end near the École Militaire.
History
Originally a flat, barren agricultural plain, it was converted in the 18th century into a vast marching ground and drill field for the cadets of the newly built École Militaire (where a young Napoleon Bonaparte trained). It later hosted several of the massive World's Fairs, including the 1889 exhibition that birthed the Eiffel Tower.
Visitor Tips
- Picnics: Arrive in the late afternoon with cheese and wine to secure a spot before sunset. The atmosphere is highly festive and communal.
- The Sparkle: It is the absolute optimal viewing point for the Eiffel Tower's hourly 5-minute sparkling light show after dark.
- Duration: 1–2 hours. It's a place to linger, not just walk through.
