History

In the late 18th century, Paris faced a massive public health crisis due to disease-ridden, overflowing cemeteries in the city center. In 1786, authorities began the macabre, decades-long project of digging up millions of corpses and transferring them at night into the city's abandoned network of mining tunnels.
